I have written to the Police Commissioner, Katarina Carroll, requesting the fraud squad investigate issues around the collapse of Ri-Con Contractors Pty Ltd.
The request is in conjunction with my colleague the Member for Kawana, Jarrod Bleijie, who has also sought an investigation.
Reports of up to 30 Gympie business have been affected by the collapse of the Sunshine Coast building company owing local contractors hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Local contractors, including Tim Bothams owner of O’Brien Plumbing Gympie, have raised with me concerns about reports that Ri-Con had provided Gympie Regional Council with signed statements that they had been paid.
At the time of their collapse Ri-Con Contractors were undertaking work for the Gympie Regional Council and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
Builders are required to provide a signed statement that sub-contractors had been paid before a client can release a progress payment.
Tim advised me that he is owed more than $150,000.
Many of the local contractors run small family owned business which cannot afford to be left with unpaid debts of this magnitude.
